Toronto, ON – PeerWorks and Peer Support Canada hosted an impactful education day at Queen's Park on November 5, 2024, engaging in numerous productive conversations with key staffers, Members of Provincial Parliament and Cabinet Members. The day highlighted the essential role of peer support in mental health and addictions recovery, with PeerWorks and Peer Support Canada emphasizing the need for increased resources and integration of peer support services across Ontario.
The day began with a breakfast reception at Queen’s Park, where PeerWorks and Peer Support Canada had the opportunity to connect with MPPs and highlight the transformative impact of peer support on communities throughout the province. PeerWorks was honoured to have the Associate Minister of Mental Health and Addictions, The Honourable Michael Tibollo, and Liberal MPP John Fraser as the morning's keynote speakers. Minister Tibollo emphasized the government’s commitment to mental health initiatives and expressed appreciation for the critical work of peer support organizations, recognizing them as vital contributors to Ontario's healthcare framework. MPP John Fraser echoed this sentiment, sharing powerful words of support for PeerWorks and Peer Support Canada, and advocating for greater provincial investment in peer support as an essential element of mental health care.
Throughout the day, PeerWorks and Peer Support Canada representatives met with a range of MPPs and senior government staff to discuss the challenges and needs faced by Ontario communities. These interactions facilitated insightful discussions on the urgent need for funding, accessibility, and the integration of peer support in provincial mental health policies.
“We are thrilled with the positive response from MPPs and the engaging conversations we had throughout the day,” said Allyson Theodorou, Operations Director of PeerWorks. “The support and commitment expressed by Minister Tibollo, MPP Fraser, and others reaffirm our belief in the essential role of peer support. Today’s events mark a significant step forward in advancing our mission to ensure peer support is available to all Ontarians who need it.”
PeerWorks extends heartfelt gratitude to all attendees, speakers, and supporters who made this day a success. The organization looks forward to continued collaboration with provincial leaders and policymakers to build a stronger, more inclusive mental health system that prioritizes peer support as a cornerstone of recovery and community care.
